Effects of 2 , 5 - Norbornadiene on Ethylene Production and Senescence of Carnation Flowers

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of 2,5-norbornadiene (NBD) on ethylene synthesis and the related enzymes¢¥ activities of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) flowers. The effect of NBD on flower senescence was also studied as compared to silver thiosulfate (STS). ¢¥White Sim¢¥ carnations were harvested at open stage and treated with STS and NBD. Ethylene production by NBD-treated flowers was very low during NBD treatment time (24 hours), and then increased rapidly after ceasing NBD treatment. The ethylene peak reached a half at one day later as compared to that of control flowers. 1-Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) content of control flowers increased continuously during the senescence of flowers. However, ACC content of NBD-treated flowers decreased during NBD treatment time, and then increased. Ethyleneforming enzyme (EFE) activity of petals in control flowers showed a peak at 6 days after harvest and then rapidly decreased. However, EFE activity of NBD-treated flowers was sustained continuously at very low level. This results suggest that NBD completely suppress the EFE activity of carnation petals. NBD completely inhibited the EFE activities of petals, ovary, and calyx of midclimacteric flowers, but did not affect those of style and receptacle. NBD treatment of climacteric (7 days after harvest) flowers for 24 hours didn¢¥t extend flower longevity. However, continuous NBD treatment prevented in-rolling symptom of petals and maintained fresh flowers for a long time during the continuous NBD treatment time. Continuous NBD treatment from climacteric flowers delayed senescence without wilting until 10th day when NBD was treated every day, but STS treatment of climacteric flowers didn¢¥t inhibit flower senescence. Once climacteric ethylene synthesis had started, STS was not effective on inhibiting ethylene synthesis or delaying senescence of carnation flowers. However, NBD was effective on inhibiting senescence of climacteric carnation flowers.
